Classes in Springfield

Quite a few folks have taken classes we've offered at the Greene County Extension Office in Springfield, MO. While it's worked out quite well having everyone bring their own laptop, we have run into some issues and are updating our instructions as we go.

If you have taken any of our classes in Springfield, have you thought of any other suggestions for improvement?

If you haven't had a chance to take any, do you have any questions?

Windows 7 and Office 2010

We upgraded our staff and lab computers to Windows 7 and Office 2010 in December and are now teaching classes on these programs.

It's fun! There are some new features that I really like- the way the Taskbar works now- you see small windows showing all items - documents, emails, etc. you have open in that program- when you slide onto the program icon on the Taskbar- you slide over them to see them bigger and then click on the one you want to switch to it. This is much easier than seeing a list and trying to figure out which is the one you want.

The button to show the desktop (and, in effect, minimize all open windows) is at the very far right on the Taskbar- after the time. You don't even think it's a button unless you put your pointer on it and see the desktop- again- if you click it, you switch to the desktop.

It's interesting that we now have "File" again in the Office programs- this time in the form of a tab- the first tab on the Ribbon. It works a little differently than they old File menu (Office 2003 and previous) or the Office Button (Office 2007), in that when you click it you no longer see your document. You still use it to get to the same choices, New, Open, Save, Save As, Print, etc.. To return to your document you just click a differnt tab.

Microsoft Office Communicator

Are you using Microsoft Office Communicator? It is a great tool- for a quick question or for a phone conference at no charge.

It is an instant messaging software that you very likely already have installed on your computer.

Setup audio and video on the tools menu leads you easily through the steps and you're ready to call someone through your computer.

If you're using the chat feature you can email a copy of the conversation to yourself when you're through so you have a record of what was said.

Microsoft OneNote

Are you using Microsoft OneNote? If not, you should check it out- there is so much you can do with it.

Take different types of notes- bulleted and numbered lists, paragraphs, copy and paste from other locations (when you copy and paste from the Internet it also pastes the URL, from a file it also pastes a link to the file!), in tables, in diagrams you make using the Drawing toolbar.
Organize notes just like you would files- by person, subject, project, etc.- move them around at any time.
Search for text in all your OneNote notebooks, just the notebook you're in, a section group or one section.
OneNote works with Outlook- create Outlook tasks, link notes to meetings and contacts, send email messages to OneNote, email notes from OneNote.
Email notes to others who don't have OneNote, save notes as PDF documents.
Do calculations and more!

To find OneNote if you have it, click Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office. Once you open it, check out the OneNote Guide (listed on the left- if it doesn't open it) and see the pages in the guide on the right.

It's a fun and useful tool- check it out.

Facebook- New Privacy Settings

Facebook has greatly reduced the number of settings you have to make to keep all of your information private. The settings will not change for everyone on Facebook at the same time- the rollout is gradual. Also- the choices you have currently set on your Facebook information will remain the same. When you do change a privacy setting once your page has upgraded, you will be changing it on multiple things at once. You will get a notice on your Facebook page when the new settings controls are available to you- when you get the announcement, there will be a link on your homepage to the new privacy guide.

Tips for Social Media Success

I found a good article with some simple basics concerning social media- Facebook, Twitter, etc. and have linked to it from this post title.

I think one main thing to remember is that these are "social" networks. So...use these as if you are having conversations with friends. Think of your conversation with a friend- you tell them what's happening with you, you listen to what's happening with them, you might give and get some useful information- at no charge.

It's fine to use social media as a marketing tool, as long as that's not all you do with it. If all you're doing is sending out ads, pretty soon you won't have a following. Ads should make up a small percentage of your use of social media. Give folks information they can really use- one easy way is to find articles like this to direct them to- and give some of your own opinions.

GED ONLINE CLASSES AVAILABLE AT TRI-LAKES TCRC

GED Online orientation and testing class will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 14 at Tri-Lakes TCRC, located in the south wing of Reeds Spring High School on Hwy 413 in Reeds Spring, Mo.

There is no fee for this program. Please contact Tri-Lakes TCRC at (417) 272-8707 to pre-register by Monday, April 12th.

This is a great opportunity for residents who do not have their GED to get started on a program to earn it. Tri-Lakes TCRC has computers which will be available for participants of this program to use at no charge

GED online is a free online class offer through Ozarks Technical Community College and Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to improve academic skills before scheduling to take the official GED exam.

Students interested in studying for their GED online can attend this 5 hour orientation and placement test class so they may access the GED online class. Students must be a Missouri resident, must be at least 17 years of age and no longer enrolled in school, have access to a computer (access provided via TCRC by appointment, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm), have an email address, have a basic understanding of navigating a web site and have a willingness to learn. Once enrolled in the online course you will be required to complete a lesson and quiz each week. If you have any further questions please call 417-447-8860 or contact ael@otc.edu.

All this technology- what to do?

We had the free Twitter session on February 12 (rescheduled from January 29 due to weather). There was a good turnout, which led to an interesting discussion.

We went through the basics of how Twitter works and struggled with creating accounts due to the web page not opening right after clicking join- you could not scroll all the way to the bottom to get to the Join Now button.

After all this, one student asked why someone would want to join Twitter- an interesting question. I wrote a small description of what Twitter is in the advertising for the class, so was of the mindset that anyone coming would want to join, not be asking why they would want to. Of course, this is the great thing about a free session, if you decide it's not for you, you haven't invested anything except a little bit of your time.

I went over the possible advantage of using Twitter as an advertising tool, but the importance of remembering it is a social network so advertising should not be the only tweets you send out- it's about creating a relationship and giving folks something of value at no charge along the way.

One student said he had come just to learn more about it because technologies like this are the thing of the future- he might not use it now. One said she came to learn and set up an account for the business she works for, but could also see using it to stay in contact with friends and family- like she does with Facebook, but quicker.

I believe it's exciting- and good for us- to learn new things, that's life and when we embrace change it's much less stressful! However, it's up to us to decide which things we learn and which we want to stick with. I just read an article by Martha Beck, life coach who I think is great, and to paraphrase- you should do the things you really need to do and the things you're passionate about. Let the others slide- if they keep coming up do them, otherwise don't worry about them.

eBay Return Policy- Rethinking it~

In the eBay classes I teach we talk about clearly stating your return policy- will you accept returns, how long does the buyer have to return the item, who pays the return shipping, how should the item be packaged and shipped on the return, etc. I maintain it's ok not to accept returns if you are clear (and nice!) about it.

Our computer classes are limited to 15 and when we had 10 on our waiting list after the first class was filled, we opened a second class and ended up with 8 in it.

Discussions were interesting and folks had some fun things to sell. One student sold a "VINTAGE TWA HOSTESS PAPER MINI-DRESS - CIRCA 1963" for $56.51.

The classes I listed in the last post are all coming to Tri-Lakes TCRC via ITV (interactive video) from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Missouri. We are thrilled at the incredible price this year- $30.00 for 6 - 8 sessions. How can you pass that up?

Free New Technologies Preview Session

Message from eBay- Save on Insertion Fees

We're writing with some exciting news about eBay fees. Starting June 16:
Every 30 days, your first 5 Auction-style listings will have NO Insertion Fees when you list with eBay's Sell Your Item form or Simple listing form--regardless of your start price.
The first 5 listings with no Insertion Fees will have a Final Value Fee of 8.75% of the sales price or $20, whichever is lower. Additional items sold during the same 30-day period will have the same Insertion Fees and Final Value Fees as they do today.
If you are currently using an eBay tool or third-party listing solution, you can either list your first 5 Auction-style listings with the new pricing structure through eBay's Sell Your Item form or Simple listing form or continue with your current practices at the current pricing-whichever option works best for you.
This change is part of our continued effort to lower the upfront costs of selling on eBay. The 5 listings with no Insertion Fees are especially helpful for sellers who may not sell in high volume, but offer unique and hard-to-find inventory buyers expect to find on eBay. Learn more.

How To Get Negative eBay Feedback Removed

eBay may remove Feedback ratings and/or comments that meet the guidelines outlined below.
Feedback ratings and comments may be removed in the following instances:

There is a violation of the Feedback Abuse policy.
A member is unable to form a legally binding contract at the time the item ended or Feedback was left.
A member provided eBay with an email address that is invalid and could not be contacted at the time of the transaction.
A member mistakenly leaves negative or neutral Feedback intended for another member, informs eBay of the error, and has placed the same Feedback for the correct member.
If a member is suspended by eBay, negative or neutral Feedback left by that member is removed. If a member is suspended within 90 days of registration, all Feedback is removed.
eBay is provided with a valid court order requesting Feedback Removal.
A buyer fails to respond to a reminder about an unpaid item.
When the buyer's communication within the Resolution Center undermines the purpose of the unpaid item process and the eBay Feedback system.

Customs Requirements
We will remove Feedback if the listing meets the Customs Requirements below and the seller receives a negative or neutral Feedback comment which references customs delays or customs fees.
The following text, or very similar text must be included in the listing and be:

In a font size no smaller than the majority of the other text in the item description
Prominently displayed (in the upper half of the description, free-standing, etc.)

Independent Feedback Review is only available on eBay Motors and allows members to submit a Feedback comment for review by an independent reviewer. The review services are provided by professional resolution organizations with expertise in resolving automotive and other issues. These organizations are unaffiliated with eBay.
When a member requests a Feedback review, the Feedback comment left for the member filing the complaint will be reviewed by an independent reviewer for a fee. Depending on the decision by the reviewer the Feedback rating may be withdrawn. eBay Class March '09

Our current eBay class started yesterday- it went well- everyone is excited about selling on eBay- all are now registered as eBay sellers and with PayPal accounts. We learned about security issues and the importance of researching completed items to help determine whether or not to list an item for sale on eBay. We talked a little bit about the power of marketing and your story. What do you think about these auctions? Is the seller making any guarantees? Being An Expert

Since I'm just starting to blog, I've been researching to see what's out there and have found some neat blogs about business and technology. I had a discussion yesterday with one of our University of Missouri Extension specialists, Velynda, about what we need to know- she and I agreed that there is so much information available in today's world- and that it changes so fast, that the main thing we need to know is how to find the answer if we don't know it. (Of course, we have to have a solid knowledge base to start with.)

New payment rules on eBay

A little while back eBay changed their payment rules and sellers can no longer accept payment by check or money order for most categories. Personally I think this is a good thing- it helps to keep buyers and sellers safer, which is the point.

As a buyer and/or a seller, what do you think about eBay no longer allowing payment by check or money order for most categories?
